Itinerary at a Glance:
Half Day Tour: Cusco – Tipón – Pikillaqta – Andahuaylillas – Cusco.
Depart in the morning or afternoon from Cusco, explore the hydraulic terraces of Tipón, the pre-Inca ruins of Pikillaqta, and the colonial Church of Andahuaylillas before returning to the city.
Itinerary
- The South Valley Tour begins with a comfortable pick-up from your hotel in Cusco, heading southeast through peaceful Andean landscapes filled with agricultural fields, traditional villages, and panoramic mountain views. As we leave the historic center behind, the route reveals a quieter and more authentic side of the region, far from the typical tourist crowds.
- Our first stop is Tipón, an extraordinary example of Inca hydraulic engineering. This impressive archaeological complex showcases perfectly preserved agricultural terraces and an intricate network of water channels that continue to function flawlessly after centuries. Carefully carved stone fountains and irrigation systems demonstrate the Incas’ advanced understanding of water management, agriculture, and the spiritual significance of natural elements within their worldview.
- Continuing the journey, we arrive at Pikillacta, a vast pre-Inca city built by the Wari civilization between 500 and 1000 AD. Unlike the refined stonework of the Incas, Pikillacta features long defensive walls, geometric urban planning, and rectangular housing compounds that reflect one of the earliest organized urban centers in the Andes. Walking through its ancient streets offers a fascinating glimpse into a powerful culture that influenced later Andean societies.
- The tour concludes in the charming colonial town of Andahuaylillas, home to the remarkable Church of San Pedro, often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas.” Inside, visitors are captivated by richly decorated baroque murals, gold-leaf altars, intricate wood carvings, and paintings from the Cusco School of Art. The church beautifully illustrates the fusion of indigenous symbolism and European artistic traditions, providing insight into the cultural transformation that shaped the region during the colonial period.
- After this enriching exploration of engineering mastery, pre-Inca heritage, and colonial artistry, we return to Cusco in the early afternoon, completing a cultural journey that reveals a deeper and lesser-known side of the Andean world.
