Itinerary
- Your adventure begins early in the morning with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco between 4:00 and 4:30 AM. Traveling south in comfortable tourist transportation, you’ll journey through quiet Andean valleys and traditional highland villages as the first light of day illuminates the surrounding mountains. The scenic drive offers a glimpse into rural life in the Andes, where farming communities continue to preserve ancestral customs.
- A stop is made at a countryside restaurant where you will enjoy a hearty local breakfast, providing the energy needed for the high-altitude trek ahead. After breakfast, the journey continues toward the trailhead, located at approximately 4,600 meters (15,091 ft) above sea level.
- From here, you will begin the uphill hike to Vinicunca. The ascent takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and is considered moderate to challenging due to the altitude. The trail gradually climbs through expansive Andean landscapes, offering spectacular views at every turn. Along the route, you’ll encounter alpacas and llamas grazing freely across the plains, admire the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcanota mountain range, and pass through striking red valleys and colorful mineral formations that hint at the vibrant summit ahead. Throughout the hike, your professional guide will explain the geological processes that created the mountain’s unique stripes, as well as the cultural significance of the region to local Andean communities.
- Upon reaching the summit viewpoint at 5,036 meters (16,522 ft), you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Andes. Here, you will have time to rest, take incredible photographs, and fully appreciate the dramatic landscape. The vivid natural colors of the mountain—formed by layers of mineral sediment—create one of the most photogenic and unforgettable scenes in Peru.
- After enjoying time at the top and celebrating your accomplishment, you will descend back to the starting point. The return journey includes lunch at the countryside restaurant before traveling back to Cusco, arriving in the late afternoon with lasting memories of this iconic Andean adventure.
