Itinerary
- Your exploration begins in the historic heart of Cusco at the iconic Plaza de Armas, the city’s vibrant Main Square. Surrounded by elegant colonial arcades and centuries-old churches, this square has been the cultural and political center of Cusco since Inca times. Here, you will admire the Cathedral of Cusco and the Church of the Society of Jesus (exterior views), both remarkable examples of colonial architecture built upon Inca foundations. As you walk through the traditional cobblestone streets, you’ll notice the extraordinary stonework that once formed the walls of Inca palaces—perfectly carved blocks that continue to support colonial structures above them.
- The tour continues to the magnificent Qorikancha, also known as the Temple of the Sun. Once the most sacred religious center of the Inca Empire, Qorikancha was dedicated to Inti, the Sun God, and originally adorned with walls covered in sheets of gold. Following the Spanish conquest, the Convent of Santo Domingo was constructed atop its foundations, creating one of the most striking examples of the fusion between Inca and colonial architecture. Inside, you’ll gain insight into Inca cosmology, religious practices, and architectural mastery.
- After exploring the city center, the journey continues to the impressive archaeological complexes located on the hills surrounding Cusco. The first stop is Sacsayhuamán, an extraordinary ceremonial fortress famous for its massive zigzag stone walls. Some of the stones weigh over 100 tons and were carved and assembled with astonishing precision—without the use of mortar—demonstrating the Incas’ remarkable engineering skills.
- Next, you will visit Qenqo, a ceremonial center believed to have been used for religious rituals, offerings, and possibly astronomical observations. Its carved rock formations and underground chambers reflect the spiritual significance of natural elements in Inca belief systems.
- The tour then continues to Tambomachay, often referred to as the “Temple of Water.” This site showcases sophisticated aqueducts, canals, and fountains that highlight the Incas’ advanced hydraulic engineering and their reverence for water as a sacred element.
- Finally, you will explore Puka Pukara, a small fortress or military outpost that once served as a strategic checkpoint guarding the entrance to Cusco. From here, you can also enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
- Throughout the tour, your professional guide will provide detailed explanations about the historical, religious, and strategic importance of each site, offering a deeper understanding of the ingenuity and spiritual worldview of the Inca civilization.
